Duration: Complete

Location: Manchester

Our scope of work on Terminal 2, included the design, management, coordination, installation, testing and commissioning of all mechanical, electrical, plumbing, ICT, BMS and security works on the new forecourt and baggage hall, as well as the addition of a 216-metre pier, an eight-storey carpark and a bus lounge.

Delivering certainty on time and on budget

To ensure project success, we brought our pioneering use of Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) together with our aviation and program management expertise.

Just nine months into the construction programme, the first of the project’s three giant DfMA mega risers were installed on site. Manufactured offsite at our CHtM facility in Oldbury, the mega risers are made up of 48 multi-service risers containing ventilation, ductwork, water piping, electrical containment and heating services. A modular energy centre housing three boilers, pumps, DHW generation / storage, controls, wiring and a CHP unit was also installed on site in just two days, delivered in five sections complete with cladding and roofing aligned to architectural requirements.

ICT and security safeguarding airport operations

Our in-house self-delivery team from Enterprise Solutions designed and installed the compete ICT and security systems for the critical and sensitive project. The network infrastructure design provides resilience and diversity for the blown fibre optic backbone network, which supports the FIDS, CUPPS, CCTV, CEM access control and BMS – allowing areas of the project to be commissioned while other sections are still under construction.

Integrated commissioning and energy efficiency

Our commissioning team authored a commissioning execution plan, commissioning activities schedule and factory acceptance testing schedule. This, along with a detailed commissioning programme integrated within the project construction programme, provided granular detail alongside high-level interfaces – highlighting every commissioning activity alongside the related methodologies, system interfaces and durations.
