Identified as an ‘Exemplar Project’ by Construction Excellence Wales

The project was managed with a combination of directly delivered DfMA solutions and local subcontractor expertise, enabling delivery at pace while also supporting the local economy. maximum value, and an efficient programme, were achieved by designing out risk, optimising our Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) potential and ensuring intelligent sequencing – all enabled by early engagement and collaboration with the client and their team. Home to 40+ specialist services, there are 560 beds, 11 operating theatres, an emergency department, a neo-natal intensive care unit, a special care baby unit and a labour and delivery department.

Early engagement

Early engagement allowed us to integrate DfMA and lessons learnt into the design to secure logistical and programme benefits. This included moving the energy centre to another part of the site to take it off the programme's critical path; constructing the permanent site access roads early in the programme to enable more efficient logistics; and locating tower cranes outside the building footprint to avoid issues around water tightness.

The hospital opened with zero defects four months early to help the Health Board respond to winter season pressures and the second wave of Covid-19. It was made possible through combining best-practice experience, smart technology, and our DfMA approach.

Complex Engineering

CHt delivered all mechanical, electrical and public health services, building management systems, specialist communications systems, CCTV, access controls, intercoms and intruder alarms for this pioneering care-centric hospital.

Added value to clients

A 23% programme saving was secured by using DfMA components. Prefabricated elements included, MEP service risers, MEP service horizontal modules, AHUs and plant skids.

“"The Grange University Hospital demonstrates the change needed in our construction industry; a beacon for the future with innovation and collaboration at its heart. There’s no going back, we have to seize this opportunity now to make construction better."”
